Spring Data Fun: πŸͺ˜ πŸ—ΊοΈ πŸ“˜

Read on for updates on data drumming, a new tool for journalists to map protests, and my latest book talk.

πŸͺ˜ First Performance of Data Drums πŸͺ˜

The world’s first live drum sonification performance is in the books! With Marcus Santos, Lili Gabaree, and a team of drummers we performed the Data Drums climate change sonificaton in late March. The intial informal feedback was a real testament to how strongly the media we use to tell data stories impacts the expereinces of audiences, a topic I explore in a lot of my work.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Launcing Protest Mapper πŸ—ΊοΈ

Journalists can struggle to connect individual events to larger movements. I built Protest Mapper to help by letting you embed interactive maps or images of local protests into your stories. Pick a timeframe, a locaton, and tweak the map. I keep the data up to date via verified reports from ACLED or CCC. I strongly belive there is a place for these kinds of small pieces of public interest technology, so I’ll keep building them.

πŸ“˜ Book Talk with We All Count πŸ“˜

I was honored to be hosted by Heather Krause at a session of the We All Count β€œData Equity” webinar series. I spoke about Community Data and related equity concerns. I appreciated the welcoming and thoughtful crowd, who validated my ongoing efforts to bridge academic and non-profit spaces for applied appraoches to creative data storytelling.
