March Updates ๐ŸŒฑ

Read on for book updates, good news on data theatre, and a new live sonification performance. Keep an eye on my Data Culture Group blog for regular writing on computational journalism and creative data storytelling. Special hugs and solidarity to all my American readers, who are facing unprecedented attacks on academic freedom, rights, and public services. At NICAR this weekend? Drop me a line to meet up.

Book Updates

Now available in the US! Get Community Data now at your favorite local bookstore or library. I love the pictures and notes from people who got a copy and found something exciting and relevant for their work. Read it already? Do me a favor and leave an Amazon review. If youโ€™re in Boston, join us at the official book launch event on March 19th at 5pm โ€” with books for sale and snacks. Register now.

Data Theatre

So excited to share that weโ€™ve received major funding from the Mellon Foundation! Theyโ€™re supporting our work to reinvent data-centered community engagement as Civic Data Theatre. The project will focus on tensions between creating green space and growing gentrification in Boston. Iโ€™m so lucky to be working with an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Northeastern, where we call ourselves the Data Theatre Collaborative.

Data Drums: A Climate Change Sonification

Unsatisfied with โ€œbleeps and bloopsโ€ approaches to turning data into sound, I decided to create Data Drums:A Rhythmic Call to Climate Action. Data Drums is a live data sonification performance that brings global COโ‚‚ emissions to life through the dynamic beats of a Brazilian-style drum ensemble. Our first performance will be at the launch event for the Northestern Center for Transformative Media, on March 28th around 5pm. Boston folks: register now to see unique four-part piece translating carbon emissions in India, Brazil, and the US in to an interactive drum performance. Itโ€™s been super fun to work with Marcus Santos and Lily Gabaree on this piece, and Iโ€™m both nervous and excited to put it out in the world.
