January Updates ποΈ
The middle of winter is cold and low on sun, but we had some snow so I went sledding with the kids βοΈπ·! Read on for book updates, notes on AI for good, and upcoming events. Keep an eye on the Data Culture Group blog for regular writing on computational journalism and creative data storytelling.
Book Updates
Get Community Data now for Kindle or in print in the UK. Iβm still pushing for US availability, but you can pre-order for shipping dates in late Feb. Itβs been wonderful to get feedback from some readers that are having their first change to learn about going beyond the visual, and others that feel validated by seeing lots of related work being highlighted. Read it already? Do me a favor and leave an Amazon review.
AI for Good
Iβm increasingly getting asked to speak on community-connected approaches to βAI for Goodβ. Interesting to think about how that suggests that the default with AI might be βfor badβ π€¨ Most of my related thoughts are reflections on work with the Counterdata Network and my work on AI-assisted content diversity audits for news. Iβm hoping to do more of this pushing back on the AI marketing mythology to motivate more concrete pro-social applications. Two related academic papers are under review for publication late this year (π€π½).
Upcoming Talk and Workshops
I have a busy upcoming schedule because Iβm trying to get in conversation about Community Data with lots of different groups. Drop me a line if youβre interested in scheduling an in-person or virtual talk. Here are some of my scheduled and tentative upcoming talks that might be near you:
ποΈJan 12 (Lincoln, NE): Keynote at the Data Storytelling Workshop and Data Art Jam
ποΈFeb 17 (San Antonio, TX): Featured speaker at the UTSA AI Spring School
ποΈFeb 18 (San Antonio, TX): Data sculptures workshop at Data Science Ed K-12 conference
π§ Feb 28 (Cambridge, MA): Invited talk at MIT
π§ Mar 19 (Boston, MA): Book launch event at Northeastern π
Thanks for reading ππ½
